What "spoken first" actually means

Most courses start with the alphabet. That is useful later. In your first three months in Bengaluru, script study competes with the one skill that changes daily life: hearing and producing short exchanges at normal speed. Transliteration is enough to get you there. KannadaMaadi is built on that bet — audio dialogues, English gloss, no Kannada letters on the learner screen.

If you already speak Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu, some vocabulary will feel familiar and some false friends will trip you. We map that in Kannada for Hindi speakers and Kannada vs Tamil and Telugu.

The first week: situations, not word lists

Prioritise phrases you will reuse:

  • Greetings and introductions (name, city you came from, work).
  • Auto and directions (left, right, stop here, how much).
  • Café / tiffin orders and polite refusals.
  • Office small-talk: "did you eat?", "shall we go?", "see you tomorrow".

A ready list lives in Essential Kannada phrases. Listening to a full dialogue before drilling words sticks better than flashcards alone — that is Lesson 1's job.

A calm weekly plan (≈3 hours)

  1. Listen to one conversation all the way through without pausing.
  2. Repeat each line out loud two or three times.
  3. Vocab — hear the lesson words; say them once.
  4. Quiz — self-check, then re-listen to weak lines.
  5. Review — a few minutes of spaced cards on another day.

Skip streak apps. Consistency of minutes beats gamified pressure. Aim for one lesson every week or two until A1 feels honest — see the CEFR A1 checklist.

What not to do early

  • Do not wait until you can read newspapers before speaking.
  • Do not collect twenty YouTube playlists without finishing one structured path ( why YouTube alone stalls).
  • Do not hire a tutor for vocabulary drills you can hear on audio — save tutors for correction later ( vs private tutor).

Start with Lesson 1

Anu has just arrived from Delhi. Ravi is a Bengalurean. Their first meeting is free, about five minutes, and designed so your ear meets real rhythm before any quiz. That is the activation path: listen → vocab → quiz — then decide if the full course fits.
